POSITION DESCRIPTION
Title: Visitor Services Associate
Compensation: $18 to $20 per hour depending on experience
Status: Year-round part-time position. Typical schedule is approximately 25 hours per week. During peak summer months, hours may increase to approximately 30 hours per week. Based on organizational needs and performance, hours may increase and remain at a higher level beyond the summer season.

POSITION PURPOSE
The Visitor Services Associate serves as the primary point of contact for visitors and community members at the Discover Kodiak Visitor Information Center. This position provides accurate information, excellent customer service, and supports merchandise sales while assisting with basic administrative and content related tasks as needed.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Answers and routes telephone calls in a courteous and professional manner. Checks voicemail daily.
2. Welcomes and assists walk in visitors and community members. Recommends Discover Kodiak members based on visitor needs.
3. Provides information on visitor attractions on Kodiak Island including directions, tours, special events, history, and culture.
4. Sells merchandise to visitors using the point-of-sale system and reconciles daily sales and receipts.
5. Maintains and tracks guest walk in lists and basic visitor statistics.
6. Checks and maintains visitor center brochures daily and coordinates with members to ensure adequate stock is available.
7. Assists with inventory management and completes annual inventory of visitor center products.
8. Provides clerical and administrative support to the Executive Director and Member Services staff as needed.
9. May assist with the design, production, and distribution of printed promotional materials including brochures, flyers, newsletters, and print advertising.
10. May assist with occasional blog writing and basic website content updates.
11. May assist with posting and responding to comments on Discover Kodiak social media accounts.
12. Other duties as assigned.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES
1. Working knowledge of the Kodiak area and visitor services preferred.
2. Excellent customer service skills and the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
3. Ability to prioritize tasks, shift between responsibilities, and meet deadlines.
4. Ability to remain professional, calm, and even tempered when working with the public, including during busy periods.
5. Basic computer skills including Word, Excel, email, and familiarity with office systems.
6. Ability to operate standard office equipment including a personal computer, photocopier, point of sale system, and other basic equipment.
7. Previous experience in tourism, hospitality, retail, or customer service preferred. 8. High school graduate required. Some college preferred.
9. Availability to work occasional evenings, weekends, and holidays, particularly during the summer season.
10. Basic writing ability and comfort learning website content management tools and social media platforms.
PROBATIONARY PERIOD
This position includes a 90-day probationary period. Performance, reliability, and overall fit will be evaluated during this time. Continued employment and any adjustment to hours following the probationary period are based on satisfactory performance and organizational needs.
DECISION MAKING AND ACCOUNTABILITY
Exercises independent judgment in day-to-day tasks. Work is subject to periodic review for accuracy, timeliness, and conformance to work standards.
EXTERNAL VISIBILITY AND CONTACT
This position has frequent contact with the public, Discover Kodiak members, and local business owners. A professional appearance and a high standard of tact, courtesy, and diplomacy are required. Must adhere to Discover Kodiak dress code standards.
WORKING CONDITIONS
General day to day activity in a visitor center and office environment, with occasional offsite activities in public settings. Must be able to stand for extended periods and lift up to 50 pounds. Must have reliable transportation.
